(Atlanta, GA) – In the same week that black conservatives gathered at the Hyatt Regency to hear from Oklahoma’s first African American Speaker of the House T.W. Shannon, former United States President Jimmy Carter asserted that the Republican Party was limited and only attractive to rich, white men. In response to President Carter’s ridiculous comments, Georgia Republican Party Minority Engagement Director Leo Smith issued the following statements:
“The Party of Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, and Martin Luther King, Sr. is now the Party of Herman Cain, J.C. Watts, and T.W. Shannon,” said Leo Smith, Minority Engagement Director for the Georgia Republican Party. “From Morehouse College to Main Street, the Republican Party’s ‘Choose Freedom’ message is resonating with black conservatives and thousands are joining the Republican ranks each and every month.
“Out-of-touch and disconnected, President Carter continues to implement fear-mongering tactics from worn pages of the Democratic Party’s playbook in hopes of advancing a liberal narrative that’s disconcerting, disingenuous, and completely contrary to reality.
“A Party of faith and freedom, the Republican Party appeals to all Americans, regardless of age, economic status, or race, who are looking to build a stronger America with more opportunities for growth and prosperity.
“Liberals like President Carter and his grandson, State Senator Jason Carter, assume black Americans want cradle-to-grave government that stifles opportunity and advancement in the name of liberalism. Nothing could be further from the truth. After working in minority engagement for over a decade, I know that at the core, black voters want the type of freedom that only the Republican Party embraces, promotes, and fights to protect.”
