“The union of these states is a wonder; their Constitution a miracle;
their example the hope of liberty throughout the world.” – James Madison
Two hundred and twenty-six years ago today, the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania adopted the United States Constitution. Since that time, the tenets of liberty, opportunity, and accountability outlined in this sacred document have served as the foundation of our nation and a guiding light for countries around the world.
But as we celebrate “Constitution Day” and honor the Framers of this exceptional document, we must also acknowledge that our cherished cornerstone is under attack.
In growing the size and scope of the federal government, the rights, powers, and responsibilities of the state have diminished. Activist judges and an out-of-control executive branch have compromised the balance created through the separation of powers. And liberal lawmakers around the country are making overt attempts on a daily basis to erode our personal freedoms and rights.
Today, on this remarkable anniversary, I hope you will renew your commitment to defending the U.S. Constitution from anyone or any group who seeks to chip away at the freedom it protects. Like President Abraham Lincoln said, “we the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution.” Because “when governments fear the people there is liberty. When the people fear the government there is tyranny.”
“We the People” must work daily to preserve the Constitution and ensure that this day is always one of joyful celebration. I challenge you to do your part and help promote this sacred document that not only revolutionized government but also served as a catalyst for freedom then, now, and for generations to come!
